What It Means

“Hard all the way” was the oft-repeated coaching cry of my grade school track coach. It’s a mantra that has stuck with me since those early days of underwhelming athletic performance. In short, that coach was telling us that we couldn’t just run toward or to the finish line, because it would mean easing up at the finish. Indeed, we needed to run through that line to finish strong.

Some three decades later, I still see the value of charging the target – that is, running straight through the finish line.

It could also be said that “hard all the way” describes life itself. Nothing comes easy, but with enough work and a healthy perspective, we can carry right on through to the finish – whenever and wherever that might be.
